Tips For Shoveling Snow
With the large amount of snow we’ve received recently, it’s inevitable that many of us will find ourselves shoveling the snow from our sidewalks and driveways. At Balanced Wellness Chiropractic Physicians, we thought it might be a great time to offer some advice to help prevent the possible injuries that could result. Back injuries, along with other musculoskeletal injuries, are serious threats while shoveling snow. If you have a snow shovel that is ergonomically correct and involves little to no bending, you are much safer. However, here’s some advice for those of us still using our old, straight-handled snow shovels.
One way you can injure yourself while shoveling snow and ice comes from lifting and twisting. Whenever you lift and then rotate your spine, whether you are shoveling snow, lifting boxes, or moving furniture, you give yourself a higher probability of injuring your vertebral discs. Your discs are designed to act as shock absorbers and to protect the nerves exiting your spine. Whenever you lift and rotate you can put the discs in a position to fail. Whenever the discs fail they can potentially lead to disc herniations, which can be extremely painful. Simply turning your whole body whenever you dump the snow, rather than twisting at the waist, can avoid the risk of this particular injury. Raising and lowering the shovel by bending your legs and keeping your back straight will further reduce the risk of serious back injuries.
With the above possibilities in mind, I don’t want you to think you need to run out and buy a snow blower. You don’t even need a new shovel. All you have to do is make some slight changes to the way you shovel snow. If you are so inclined to buy a new snow shovel (and you can still find one in the stores), choose one that is ergonomically correct and requires the least bending possible. It’s also a good idea to choose a shovel with a plastic blade. Snow doesn’t stick to the blade nearly as much, which makes it lighter. They’re also usually a bit flimsier which limits the load they’ll carry, and therefore limits the load your back must carry. It may take you a bit longer to shovel your driveway or sidewalk, but it will be worth it in the long run for the health of your spine. As with any exercise, you should warm up first and stretch after finishing the job. Particularly, stretch your legs, arms and low back to help with any soreness the next day. Avoid applying heat to any soreness or injuries sustained while working outside, as this will only increase inflammation and exacerbate the condition. As always, get your spine checked regularly by your chiropractor, and if you experience pain or other symptoms after shoveling snow.

Chiropractic Can Help With Weather-Related Injuries
Oklahoma always seems to have its fair share of icy weather each winter. In light of the icy weather we’ve had in the area lately, I wanted to share some information about slipping on ice.
I’ve met patients who experienced a variety of injuries as a result of a slippery fall. These can range from a minor scrape or bruise to concussions, broken wrists, and tailbone fractures. While the fall can be rather painful, most don’t think much of it since they could move around with ease after getting up. However, eventually you may notice regular occurrences of hip and pelvic pain, chronic wrist soreness, and even shoulder problems, all of which are a direct result of a fall, but are often not attributed to the fall at the time.
While slipping on a snowy sidewalk may seem like a small thing at the time, it can balloon into something much more unpleasant in just a few short weeks. Waiting months or years to fix it makes the problem more difficult to correct. So, if during this winter season you become one with the ground, call your chiropractor right away. The sooner you act the better off you’ll be!

Year End – Best of Balanced Wellness
As 2010 comes to an end and 2011 fast approaches, it only seemed right to reminisce and give thanks to everyone who helped support and grow the practice into what it is today. The clinic couldn’t have come this far without the help of friends, family, and the wonderful patients who come through the front door. It was the dream of Drs. Dustin and Angela Schmidt to open a beautiful, state-of-the-art chiropractic and acupuncture clinic in the heart of Edmond to serve the community; and to offer a balanced, natural approach to health care. Here is the story of their clinic’s humble beginnings and a recap of some of the year’s events:
November 2009 – Balanced Wellness was in the final stages of completing a brand-new, state-of-the-art clinic in the heart of Edmond.
February 2010 – Balanced Wellness opened its doors and welcomed new patients to the practice.
April 2010 - Turnoff Week was April 19-25. This event encouraged parents and kids to turn off TV and computer screens in order to become more active.
July 2010 - 2010 Worlds Sitting Volleyball was an incredible event held at UCO July 11-18, 2010. Both Doctors, who are passionate about Paralympic sports, volunteered at the historic event.
May 2010 - May is National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month. ThermoActive cold and hot mobile compression therapy was unveiled at the clinic. These are not standard hot/cold packs...they are anatomically designed supports that deliver targeted relief from painful injuries. The clinic began offering back, elbow, and shoulder supports for purchase. Quick, easy, and convenient monthly payment plans were offered through Care Credit. The clinic welcomed Tanner Schmidt to the team this month. Tanner is the Office Manager and is responsible for billing, insurance, helping to manage the practice, and also a chiropractic assistant.
June 2010 – The clinic began emailing monthly newsletters full of insightful information. Signing up on the website is free! (www.BalancedWellnessOK.com) The week of June 6-12 is National Headache Awareness Week, and chiropractic and acupuncture can help alleviate headaches naturally. On June 14, 2010, Balanced Wellness closed its doors for the day due to the torrential downpours that flooded the city streets. The clinic began its “Show How Much You Care...” campaign this month that encouraged existing patients to take a flower to a friend or loved one to let them know they care about their health & well being. The friend or family member could bring the card that was attached to the flower back to the clinic for FREE first day services in appreciation of a $20 donation to the American Heart Association.
July 2010 - Balanced Wellness began offering digital meridian imaging through AcuGraph. It’s like a lab test for acupuncture that measures select acupuncture points on the hands and feet to show evidence-based exam data and acupuncture point selection. This allows the patient the most advanced treatment options available. An accurate acupuncture meridian analysis takes about two minutes with this new state-of-the-art equipment. The clinic also became in network with Aetna this month.
August 2010 – Doctors Schmidt are not only dedicated to the health of the community, but to volunteering as well. This month both doctors participated in the Edmond Young Professionals Habitat for Humanity. On August 26, 2010, Drs. Dustin and Angela Schmidt spoke at the Edmond Chamber of Commerce Women's Network Breakfast at River Oaks Golf Club. They discussed proper posture and how purses, backpacks, and even bras can affect posture and health.
September 1 – October 30 – Balanced Wellness ran their first “Fall Canned Food Drive” for two months in an effort to collect canned goods for the Edmond Young Professional’s First Annual Trick or Eat event to benefit the Edmond Hope Center. In less than two weeks, patients at the clinic showed incredible generosity and enthusiasm!
October 2010 - October is National Chiropractic Health Month! 2010’s theme was “Why Weight? Get Healthy!” and it focused on how doctors of chiropractic play an important role in preventing and treating obesity. The press release and more campaign information can be found on the American Chiropractic Association’s website. The clinic became in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield. By October 7, the food donation box was busting at the seams thanks to all of the generous patients! The clinic welcomed another employee to the team, Lacey Reeder. She is Director of Marketing and Public Relations, and she regularly conducts business appreciation and health screening events at local Edmond businesses.
October 30, 2010 - The Edmond Young Professionals hosted the 1st Annual Trick or Eat food drive to benefit the Edmond HOPE Center on this day, and it was a huge success! The goal was to raise 8,000 pounds of food, and Crest Foods got them halfway there by donating 4 pallets of food (4,000 pounds). Balanced Wellness donated 175 pounds of food to the Edmond EYP Trick or Eat food drive Saturday afternoon. The generous patients at the clinic donated all of this food and it will all go to the Edmond HOPE Center. Big congratulations to the Edmond Young Professionals for a successful first annual Trick or Eat event. Their goal was to collect 8,000 lbs. of food for the Edmond HOPE Center and they went above and beyond and collected 18,000 lbs. of food!! Thanks again to our patients who donated to help EYP exceed their goal!
November 2010 - Be the office hero! Beginning this month, the clinic began offering free 10-minute chair massages to local Edmond small businesses as a token of appreciation for hard work in the community. Lacey Reeder is in charge of coordinating and conducting these events, and she also offers a complimentary health survey at the event.
December 2010 – With the holiday season in full swing and the year coming to an end, the clinic posted the 12 Days of Health and Wellness on the clinic’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/BalancedWellnessChiropractic). These informative daily newsletters offered tips and suggestions for living a healthy lifestyle.
Did you know…
Chiropractic patients have a 95% satisfaction rate with their care, and according to Consumer Reports, chiropractic ranked #1 for Low Back Pain. Approximately 80% of adults have suffered from back pain at some point in their lives, and chiropractors consistently rank at the top when it comes to patient satisfaction.
Doctors of chiropractic are offering promising results with non-drug treatments that focus on postural muscles, nutrition and lifestyle changes that affect brain activity.
If you have headaches and migraines, you're not alone. 9 out of 10 Americans suffer from them, but there is something natural you can do to help…see your chiropractor.
Unfortunately, the days of eating healthy foods because they are good for you are gone. Carrot farmers are having to market baby carrots like junk food so people will eat them.
Research and published studies show that increasing sleep, decreasing stress, and stepping up your amount of exercise all plays a role in helping conquer the cold virus.
Research studies show that antibiotics are often not much more effective than the body's own immune system, and repeated doses of antibiotics can lead to drug-resistant bacteria. Chiropractic and acupuncture are natural ways to boost the immune system so the body can heal itself. Chiropractors can also adjust ears, which can help with drainage.
Simple tasks around the house and yard, such as raking leaves, usually involves repetitive motions that can leave you sore, or even injured. Chiropractors can help provide solutions to help prevent injuries.
Did you know that an acupuncture needle is so small that it can fit inside a standard needle like those used to start IV's in hospitals? For those who are afraid or apprehensive to have needles used for acupuncture, there are other methods of point stimulation, such as electronic and laser acupuncture.
Seasonal allergies? Sinus pain or pressure? Traditional (needle) and electronic laser acupuncture can help! Acupuncture has proven results with allergies, headaches, migraines, and much more. Relieve seasonal allergies the natural way…a study of 26 hay fever patients published in the American Journal of Chinese Medicine showed that acupuncture reduced symptoms in all 26 - without side effects! In a second study of some 72 people, more than half experienced completely eliminated symptoms, with just two treatments.
When a car doesn't get routine maintenance it breaks down...well, the same happens with your spine. The spine is a complex structure that is used and worked everyday for 80-90 years or longer. Cars can be replaced, but your spine can't, so do your body a favor and give your spine the maintenance it deserves. Chiropractors can help get you started on the road to good spinal hygiene.
Floss your spine? We've all heard some people say that once you go to a chiropractor, you have to go for the rest of your life. What people may not realize is that they go to their dentist for the rest of their life. Dental hygiene, and spinal hygiene, are good things.
Start the New Year off right by practicing good spinal hygiene. People often make New Year's resolutions to eat better, exercise, and stop bad habits. Having a health spine is often overlooked, yet it is an essential part of living a balanced, healthy life.
As we’ve reflected upon the past year, we now look forward to a new year of helping more people achieve better health and reaching their goals. From all of us at Balanced Wellness, we hope you have a safe and Happy New Year!

ARE YOU GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP?
Years ago, before the invention of the light bulb, people slept an average of 10 hours per night; today (according to 2002 Sleep in America Poll) Americans sleep an average of 6.9 hrs on weeknights and 7.5 hrs per night on weekends.
How Much Sleep Do You Need?
Exactly how much sleep you need varies from person to person, but experts agree on average, 7 to 9 hours should be sufficient. What about children? Preschoolers (ages 3-5) need 11 to 13 hours, school age children (up to 12) need 10 to 11 hours, and adolescents need 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep each night.
Sleep is a necessity for our bodies to restore and replenish itself, for example, important hormones are secreted, blood pressure is lowered, kidney functions change and memory is consolidated, just to name a few. Not to mention, poor sleep habits leave us feeling tired, sleepy, and sometimes just outright exhausted. When we talk about a good nights sleep we mean comfortable, undisrupted, sound sleeping, so when we awake we feel rested, alert and ready for a new day.
Tips for getting a good night sleep:
Routine
Having a set bedtime and allowing an hour or so before bedtime to relax.
Relax
Turn off the television, listen to calm music or read a book.
Environment
Make your bedroom a comfortable place to sleep.
Comfortable
A quiet, cool and dark bedroom is the best for sleeping.
Exercise
Exercising will help you sleep if done at least three hours earlier.
Eating
Try not to eat at least 2-3 hours before bedtime.
Mattress
Make sure your mattress is suited for your needs, and not worn out.

STRESS. Chiropractic just might be the answer to relieving stress.
There are so many different causes of stress, especially in today’s fast paced world. It seems like bills pile up faster than ever and that can lead to being overworked and that can lead to worrying about our job security, and that can lead to arguments with coworkers or with our spouse and children. You see how fast this can snowball and some people will become overwhelmed and totally frustrated.
Physical stress may be the result of not getting the proper sleep, having to many things to do, a poor diet or just getting over being ill. Mental stress can come from worrying about bills, losing your job, illness or death of a spouse or loved one.
Whatever the cause, stress can take a toll on you physically and mentally. Even the smallest of problems can sometimes totally stress you out.
Tips to help you with those stressful times.
• Exercise – Exercising is an excellent way to relieve tension and anxiety, it will also help you get into good physical condition, sleep better at night, feel more confident about yourself and simply be much more healthier.
• Walking – This topic would normally be in the exercise category, however, it seems that just a short walk can clear your mind and really help to relieve stress especially for elder’s or a person unable to do certain exercises.
• Breathing Exercises – While sitting quietly try to focus on your breathing, take in deep breaths, hold it in a few seconds, and then release by blowing out gently. Make sure to concentrate on your breathing, repeat this for a few minutes.
• Yoga – Yoga is an excellent way to relieve stress. You can also do your own mediating at home without ever taking a Yoga class. All you need is a quiet room and a few minutes to relax. Start by sitting comfortable, you want to focus on all your different muscles by tightening them for 5 seconds and then relaxing them for a minute or so. Start with your scalp muscles, then your face muscles and so on working your way down your body. Its very important to let your mind relax, try to put yourself in a calm and tranquil place, maybe somewhere you’ve been and enjoy. Try to keep the outside world out of your thoughts completely.
Stress Is A Serious Matter.
Stress can be much more serious than most people think, stress is proven to cause illness and other health problems that could even become life threatening.
We can identify and treat stress through nutrition, exercise, adjustments, and lifestyle.
Why live with stress when you really shouldn’t have to.
